I really like Morningstar.com'c Portfolio X-Ray feature. It costs $$ but you can get a free 2-week trial - long enough to examine a very detailed breakdown of your current holdings (% in each sector, style etc) and figure out how that would change if you rebalanced.

I grew up a few blocks from Wrigley field in the 50's,60's, 70's and left in 79, it was not the whimsical picture you have painted, the streets were loaded with gangs, no parking, poor schools and filthy public transportation. The yuppies came in, bought up the neighborhoods in the 80's, gutted 100+ year old houses and sold them for ungodly amounts of money, and yet the parking is worse than ever, schools are still bad, but after seeing the filthy streets of NY city I can honestly say Chicago is cleaner. Give me the countryside anyday, keep your bustling city for those who enjoy it.

Seems like you have already gotten a jumpstart by writing down the goals you want to achieve. I think you can do it in 40 days (not quite 40 now). Good luck!

Perhaps you could assist your mother with her budget, finding ways to help her save.
An example is transferring to a prepaid 'straight talk' cell phone package from WalMart for only $30 a month you get 1000 any time/any where minutes & 1000 text messages.
You can even save $1200 over 2 years switching from a cell phone contract to Walmart's $45 a month prepaid 'straight talk' package for unlimited calls and text. It even pays you to pay the contract cancellation fee to go on to these very cheap prepaid packages.

First, I know exactly what Till Debt Do Us Part episode you're talking about, and I agree that hubby is a d-bag. I was almost ill when I finished watching it. Thankfully, my BF agreed. Um, so I make around $50k more than BF does, and that disparity will continue or increase for the next 5 years while he finishes his medical residency, which is notoriously low-paying. For us it makes zero sense to contribute equally when I so far outearn him. We contribute to our joint fund 67/33; I put in $2k/month, he puts in $1k. The flip side is that when he finishes his residency, by projected incomes for his specialty he'll immediately outearn me by $50-$100k, assuming yearly raises for me.

We occasionally struggle with joint finances, because he's also of the sort where he doesn't want to account for everything to the penny like I do. So I pick my battles. As long as our monthly savings goals are met, all bills are paid and we've got food, I really don't care what we do with the rest. We have $500/month in fun money, because we can and want to. But our deal is that whatever we don't use is immediately put into savings and can't be carried over to the next month. This will probably change once we're married, but right now I'll just be anal about my personal budget and be a little more lenient on our joint, because we're both getting what we want out of living together that way.

Sorry for the long rambling post. It's Friday and I'm tired (thanks Lysacek!) :).

That's a really great overview of your couple-y finances - I think if the income's split anywhere from 40/60 it's easier to divide up the big stuff and have a pretty equitable financial arrangement. It's great that the living situation benefits both of you romantically and financially.

Mapgirl, thanks for the insight into you and your boyfriend's finances. I also live with my b/f and even though I currently make about $10K more than him, we split our finances down the middle. He's also a big picture guy while I like to crunch numbers and know my finances down to the penny so I make sure all the bills get paid. It works out for now, but we'd revise our arrangement if either of us got laid off, a significant raise, or if we got married.
