Two years ago when I first joined my new company, I was planning on laser eye surgery so I stuck with the Flexible Spending Account option with a PPO health plan. I was familiar with saving all year for my health expenses so it was easy to do and a no-brainer.
Then open enrollment came around [...]

I have another filling today. It’s to replace an old silver one. Actually, I rarely have a new cavity needing filling anymore. Slowly, my dentist is replacing my silver amalgam ones with ceramic. I’ve been getting them done at a rate of about 1-2 per year.
So that’s $350 out of my HSA today. Quite a [...]

I went to the dentist the other day and had a $350.00 co-pay on my ceramic filling.
I paid for it out of pocket and then went to my corporate intranet to figure out how to get reimbursed for my payment. I spent 30 minutes running around and calling different places and was feeling really frustrated. [...]

Updated status: My PRK eye is not doing well. The bandage lens was drying out but I didn’t know it. I never wore contact lenses so I had no idea I was supposed to be soaking the lens as much as possible during the first 48 hours. So I have SPK, which mainfests itself as [...]

Here’s a few more thoughts on the matter.

All was successful with my surgery last week. There were only two problems, but not huge ones. Since I changed jobs, I don’t have an insurance card yet, so I’ve paid for all of meds out-of-pocket. That’s not the problem though, and I’ll explain why.
First of all, I told the nurses, technicians, and doctors that [...]

I think I’m going to be lucky if I reach the peak of my 2007 net worth.
The reason is two-fold.
1. I am taking a bath in the markets lately in my retirement accounts. Coupled with my low contribution rate in 2008, I think I’ll be lucky to be flat and not lose anything in the [...]

Sorry for not posting till very late today, but yesterday I had my vision correction surgery. I’ll write up more about it later since there is a lot to tell about it, from a medical perspective as well as a personal finance one. (No, REALLY!)
I hope all of you have a very nice weekend! Check [...]

If you have a spare pair of eyeglasses, please consider donating it to this exhibition in London.
Most of my prep school friends were Jewish and a few of them had family members who were Holocaust survivors. It would mean a very lot to me.
I think this would be a fitting way to get rid of [...]

I will have 6 free exams surrounding my laser eye surgery appointment, and they’re all free.
This means three pre-operation exams at the laser surgeon’s office. Two for taking scans (I had to have an extra one because I don’t make enough tears and they gave me a tear therapy regime after which they took more [...]
