Net Worth Analysis

by mapgirl on November 14, 2008

I did some quick analysis of my net worth over the last 3 years. It’s a download of my stats from Net Worth IQ and took some quick looks.

I get discouraged, so sometimes it helps to really think about where I’ve been and how I got where I am now. I am in a better [...]

Free Debt Reduction Tool

by mapgirl on October 22, 2008

As much as I love Quicken, I like finding free online tools I can suggest to my personal finance counseling clients. While browsing resources for counselors, I found the Utah State University Extension site PowerPay.
Basically it’s a no-frills debt management program that allows a person to enter their debts and interest rates and develop a [...]

Big Credit Card Debt Moves

by mapgirl on October 21, 2008

Alrighty, with this fabulous new credit limit increase on one of my cards, I decided to shop around a bit. There’s a few things I’ve been doing lately and observations I wanted to share.
1. I have a few other credit cards, but I never charge them up. Lately I’ve been spreading things around to get [...]

The Current State of Affairs

by mapgirl on October 8, 2008

Well, I was feeling lucky last week, but now BRKB is sliding with the rest of the market and I am officially in the red with all of my retirement accounts. This means everything is shrinking in value, and not that I’m actually in debt. Which I am. But not against those accounts. I don’t [...]

Are You Sure Credit Is Being Tightened?

by mapgirl on October 6, 2008

Yahoo Finance and Kiplinger’s are both reporting that credit is being tightened by lenders.
Funny, I can’t tell.
I just logged into my credit cards over the weekend and found out the credit limit on one of them has nearly doubled to $19K. Beats the heck out of me why. I never asked for it and neither [...]

September 2008 Goals: Trashed

by mapgirl on October 3, 2008

Goal #1
Specific – Contribute to my 401k plan
Done. But I reduced my contributions to 5%.
Grade: Pass
Goal #2
Specific – Reduce my credit card debt
Measurable – By 50% or $9,137 (rounded up to $10K)
Achievable – Monthly payments of $762
Because I committed to a very expensive Christmas present for my mother, I’m abandoning this goal completely and will [...]

Snowflaking and a Few Debt Management Tips

by mapgirl on September 25, 2008

Snowflaking is a derivative of the Debt Snowball. I’m not a formal snowflaker. Silly names don’t mean much to me. But I did pull a classic snowflake maneuver this week.
I put away $200 more into savings. And I looked at my money for the rest of the month and decided that I could put $100 [...]

Freebies Last Week

by mapgirl on September 19, 2008

I went to Jaleo again with work. I tried a Pedro Jimenez for the first time. I’m not a huge fan of sherry, but Jaleo wins because they have appropriate cordial glasses for about $4-5 bucks, depending on the wine. I tried their mussels, a squid with black ink sauce, and their asparagus. I had [...]

Spending This Week

by mapgirl on August 29, 2008

I bought some gas early this week so I could truck my butt out to the boonies for a corporate conference in the countryside. It was actually pretty great as I got some excellent training for my resume that directly impacts my project. All meals were paid for out there and I was covered for [...]

Reader Question on Unused Credit Accounts

by mapgirl on June 12, 2008

First off, I don’t give out financial advice because I’m not an advisor. If you need that, ask someone who is certified and pledges to do business ethically. I’m not that person. I’m here to *entertain* you.
That being said, someone asked this question:
I did recently check my credit report and found that I have five [...]
