Not to sound like a total corporate shill here, but Hilton currently has a ‘Double Dip‘ program so you can get both hotel and airline points. Better yet, if you use Delta this summer, you can 3x airline points. Charge the hotel & airfare on your American Express and that’s even more points! (And none of those links are affiliate links in any way. I make very little off your eyeballs. The Google Ads are another matter. haha)
So in starting to travel for my job, I’m discovering all kinds of tips and tricks, like maximizing my per diem, learning the GSA per diem rates around the US for government travel, & who has good breakfasts, etc. It helps that Boyfriend is a civil employee who travels a lot for work. He already told me how some stuff works and gave me some good tips.
For instance, you can’t take a full day’s per diem on a travel day. The government expects you to pro-rate it to about 75% of the allocated rate. Okey dokey. I’ll budget for that.
In setting my computerized travel profile on my company’s website, I flipped over my Marriott Rewards card and found a special permanent Hertz promotion code. GO FIGURE. I mean there is cross-marketing and there’s cross-marketing, but I never seem to have a promotion code when I need one. Now I will always have one!
Most of the time for personal travel, I am frugal Fanny and I only shop on sites like Orbitz, Travelocity, kayak, Megabus, etc. I rarely get hotels and crash at the homes of family or friends. Now that I get to travel all the time, I hope to upgrade my personal travel and push myself less upon my loved ones.
Speaking of loved ones, I’m hoping that I can make enough points to pay for hotels & airfare for myself and my parents this summer. Even if it’s not for both family weddings, it will definitely reduce the dent in my finances.
Irony here? My silly dad (remember he’s addle-pated from the stroke) tells me that he dislikes me flying around for work. I laughed and told him that I have to do this for my job right now and he’d better like it since it’s going to pay for his vacation. He laughed and said, ‘Oh ok. Then I guess it’s alright.’ Silly man.

Funny, I was reading this right as I was finalizing work travel plans!
Do you know, for this Delta bonus, if you can’t take advantage of it if you didn’t reserve the flight with Hilton? I’m flying Delta, staying at a Hilton, for my next trip, but I don’t know if I lost out by not getting the flight through Hilton.
Thanks! Happy travels!
Stephanie, you have to sign up with Hilton with their rewards program and sign up with Delta as your preferred point partner. I don’t think you have to book your flight via Hilton. I think you just need to make sure your Delta SkyMiles number is on the flight, and your SkyMiles account is tied to your HHonors account. But you can always call and check it out.
