I thrive on change. I have a short attention span, but also great focus. I suspect I have ADD and end up hyperfocusing in an obsessive way over certain things and not others. Fortunately, it’s not an impairment so it’s no problem, and therefore not a true clinical self-diagnosis, but I digress.
What I’m trying to tell you is that I am changing jobs. It’s part of why I’ve been coy on my blog and not writing very much. I left one contract for another when I got a call out of the blue for another consulting firm. I had my ear to the ground and threw my hat into the bull ring just to see what would happen. I have a way of haphazardly looking for work. But again, I digress.
I actually didn’t think this was a serious call since this firm had just told me via their automated system that they didn’t need me. So I didn’t think much of it. We all get dinged from time to time. I had a new contract going and it was some interesting work. But then the recruiting calls got intense very quickly and they’re asking me for my salary requirements before I even get an in-person interview scheduled. It’s sort of nutty.
All of the sudden, things congeal together and I have an offer. The timing is very poor. I’ve been on my current contract for a few weeks and I’m jumping to another firm. I feel bad, but to my credit, I gave them a commitment and they told me this week that they are surprised at how dedicated I am to the work despite my imminent departure. My project lead said he’d be half-checked out, but I replied, ‘There’s too much work.’
I would like to think I am going to make an impact on this project in a positive way. Only time will tell.
I realize now that I was in a ‘name your price’ situation and I should have asked for more. A lot more. They would have said yes. I have some experience that is hard to find in one package. This is what happens when you blindside yourself through ignorance. However, I am getting a decent raise which will allow me to achieve 6-figures in the next 3 years if the regular raises aren’t crappy. I have failed at my own personal maxim of making every raise at least 10% higher than my current salary.
So that is why I am going to California for a few days while I can. I very much want to see my newborn niece as I usually ended up seeing my nephews as infants, 7 months and older.

Congratulations on the new job! I’ve been reading your blog since 2007, so it’s been interesting to see your changes in jobs and money outlook since then.
Congratulations! I had another interview today…
So nice to be courted, isn’t it?
Congrats on the new job–may it be all that you’re hoping for. (And may my old English teacher not see that, once again, I ended a sentence with a preposition!)
Congratulations on the new job!
Congrats to you on the new gig! I’ve been inquiring the last week or so too. Can’t wait to read some details on the new direction you are heading in! I had a great time running around Adams Morgan this weekend.
