What’s a “significant car repair” to you? To me, having to replace my clutch is a significant repair. It costs about $1000.00 to replace one. And it is a lot of work to do it. But at the same time, that’s a maintenance item since a clutch doesn’t last forever.
I’d say a significant repair is anything over about $700.00. Most stuff on cars is smaller than that and doesn’t take too long to install. If it takes me more than half a day to fix it, I’d say it’s significant.
But then again, I’ve been watching my boyfriend tinker with his car, and he really gets into it. He just replaced the radiator on his Jeep at home. Rather than weld the cracks, he got a new one, because he doesn’t have a welder. I mean, if you phrase it like that, it seems significant right? Since it only took him like 2 hours to install it, that doesn’t seem like a lot, does it?

@DebtHater To jump in, 2 me maintenance is oil, brake pad, headlight replacements etc. Sig repair is replacing transmission, body work etc.

@RevancheGS New clutch would be maint & important. For me, Sig = $300+ & non-routine/abnormal/poor perf-related ie: replacing engine @ 5 yrs

Any time I have to get out the jackstands and the air tools, it is a “significant car repair.”

I guess also I would say, if it takes me longer than 3 hours, it is significant.
Standard maintenance – oil change, wiper replacements, etc.
Significant maintenance – clutch replacement, new tires, etc.
