No Spend Sunday and Other Weekend Eating

by mapgirl on September 14, 2009

Friday night: Boyfriend spent about $50 on dinner groceries. There was a shrimp appetizer with a spicy mayo. Main course was breaded chicken topped with a sweet salsa (made by some guy he met while traveling for work), asparagus with lemon butter, spicy roasted potatoes with a 2005(?) Placido Chianti. (The first, expensive bottle was just plain old awful to my palate. Expensive is relative. It was $16 vs $5, far less than at a restaurant.) Dessert was red velvet cake & chocolate chip ice cream from the supermarket. I’m glad they sell 1/2 cakes.

Saturday: Went to dim sum at China Garden in Rosslyn** with a friend’s family. The owner loves my friend’s kids, so we got the royal treatment. We kicked in a little money for lunch before we left ($20), and I’ll settle up the rest later this week. I have yet to have better dim sum in DC. (The best part had to be this bridesmaid we saw in LED flashing heels. Kind of taking away from the bride if you ask me…)

Saturday night was leftover breaded chicken (extra uncooked cutlets). I re-breaded them with Ritz crackers, Italian breadcrumbs and poultry spices (heavy on thyme, sage, salt and pepper). Boyfriend gave it a thumbs up. Side dishes were canned peas, canned creamed corn (wanted to use up a can I found in the camping gear), and Zatarain’s rice/black beans. The creamed corn was a really bad idea because the flavors didn’t fit in.

Sunday: Took boyfriend to the airport in the morning and went to a friend’s house to craft/knit all day. I took over some snacks I knew would go stale if I didn’t share them. (Nilla wafers from the camping trip and the unopened Nature Valley Peanut Nut Clusters. The clusters were a really good treat, but overly sweet. Better the kids eat them than me.)

Dinner was leftovers from the fridge and then lots of house cleaning.

So I didn’t really spend anything at all this weekend, but I only count Sunday as a No Spend Day. I told my boyfriend that I would finish settling up the dim sum check this week. I really didn’t want him to buy us lunch because he spent so much the night before, but I think he wanted to make a good show as my gwei lo boyfriend in front of my friend’s parents by giving her the money.

** BTW, China Garden has a large non-Chinese clientele, but don’t let that bother you. Unlike a lot of places around the US, there are a lot of former State Dept types who did a stint in China, so they really like the good stuff. The sticky rice is possibly the best I’ve ever eaten, way better than the place I ate in Silicon Valley at Christmas.

Dear Mapgirl,

I just found your blog and like it. I need to get started with personal finance. I am in Debt and need to sort myself out. What posts (from which year) do you suggest I read to get started?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks so much
