It’s not an issue of getting my money out or anything like that. I am a dumbass for following my heart, moving in with my boyfriend, and establishing legal residency in DC. By doing this, I’ve screwed with my health insurance at work and therefore my HSA account. Because I have a different insurance carrier in DC, I can no longer automatically put money into my HSA. I have to open a new one.
I’m under the account minimum for investing my assets in my Virginia-based account. And I have no idea what the conditions are with the HSA in DC. More than likely I’ll be able to roll one account over into the other, but it really cheeses me off to do this. I work for a national company, why on earth can’t the benefits be nationalized too? It’s completely ridiculous to have 3 different carriers in the DC metro area because there are 3 different states, but there you go. Doing a rollover will take time and will probably have some sort of hidden cost involved, but I can’t let the money languish with the old administrator for an anemic 0.5%APR.
The plan now is to do absolutely nothing with any of the HSA accounts. Because I don’t yet have an account established in DC, I had an extra $100 in my last paycheck and will probably not have one the next paycheck. It’s hard to tell since some bank out of nowhere already sent me a check card for the account, without any other information. I am skeptical this is going to fly for my next paycheck.
This also means I fall short on my goal to save $2400 in my HSA this year. Due to delays in establishing accounts from a dearth of information and general bureaucratic issues, I’ll only save about $2000. But since I’ll end up with $500 from my company, I guess I shouldn’t be too annoyed.
So yeah, I’ll be paying $700 out of pocket for dental fillings this year. phooey.
