Selling Off My Crap

by mapgirl on July 30, 2009

Cap would be so proud. My boyfriend gets rid of stuff on eBay and Craigslist all the time. Now that I can point to stuff and say, “I don’t want it anymore,” he can sell stuff for me in less than a day.
Latest sale was my old Trek 1000 sport-entry racer. I bought it for [...]

Life is a Challenge

by mapgirl on July 29, 2009

My boyfriend’s mother was laid off recently. It’s sad because she works for a prominent national charity as a fund raiser, and busted her chops to bring in the money in a down market, but even so, they let her go in a mix of layoffs and office politics. This is her second lay off [...]

Where’s George?

by mapgirl on July 28, 2009

I got a $5 bill on Friday night when I was collecting cash for dinner. It has a red WheresGeorge.com stamp on it. Of course, I had to give it a try.
I logged in and made an entry. This bill has traveled ~775 miles from Florida to Virginia/DC.
There’s a wacky guy named Wattsburg Gary who’s [...]

I Suspect…

by mapgirl on July 28, 2009

I am not an investment genius. I think I am a diligent saver.
My 401k is up 16% for the year. But last year it was down, some 37%.
Yes, the market has rebounded a bit, true. But saving regularly into a down stock market has produced these results.
I’m also exploring a more balanced portfolio of stocks [...]

Prosper Re-opened on a Limited Basis

by mapgirl on July 27, 2009

You’d think I’d be happy about this, but I now live in DC, so all I can do is transfer my money out of it.
But if you live in any of the states that can still make investments in Prosper, by all means, do it. (California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New [...]

Improvisational Cooking

by mapgirl on July 24, 2009

I was reading The Kitchn this week and there was one post that stuck out in my mind. Readers were asking how to learn to cook without recipes. To make stuff up or cook by memory.
I don’t know about you, but I learned to cook at home with my mom. Even so, I’m not good [...]

Budget Once, Budget Twice

by mapgirl on July 24, 2009

Thinking more about yesterday’s post there’s two concepts I really want to highlight.

1. There is budgeting for your groceries and pre-planning your meals.
2. There is budgeting your time and pre-planning your activities.
Planning things in advance really helps. While there are many sites that will tell you to pre-plan your menu for the week when you [...]

No Spend Monday and Weekend Cooking Recap

by mapgirl on July 23, 2009

I successfully packed lunch for 2-3 days on Sunday night and took a stack of Rubbermaid and Ziploc boxes to work. (Yes! It’s a shameless plug for a stock I own because I love Rubbermaid!)
By fighting my urge to buy a soda as a beverage all day long, I ended up spending nothing on Monday. [...]

Are You Shy? Networking Help

by mapgirl on July 22, 2009

I know it’s hard for the DC PF Bloggers to believe, but I am a shy person. When playing hostess for happy hour, I’m all hale and hearty to make everyone feel welcome. It’s not a crippling shyness, but I definitely have a lot of anxiety about strangers.
In truth, I am a misanthrope and I [...]

Bad Timing

by mapgirl on July 21, 2009

Comment from Reader Slinky:
My mum recently asked me for a loan (and isn’t THAT weird?) and I felt really bad to say no. If I had the money and felt secure, she’s one of the few people that I’d give that money to in a heartbeat. But the economy is iffy, my job was [...]
