The overall concept of this list is that samples save you money and effort. Buy a small amount before you commit to a larger purchase.
1. You can buy individual stick-on tiles and move them around the floor to figure out which one looks best.
2. You can buy small jars of paint which are a few ounces, but enough to coat a section of the wall and give you a feel for what it will look like. Or paint posterboard and move it around the room, especially if it’s a strong accent color and you’re deciding which wall to paint.
3. New lights make a world of difference. Don’t chintz out on the lights. They really do spruce up the place. Don’t mix and match though. Keep it cohesive. If you’re buying brushed nickel for the foyer, buy brushed nickel for the living room.
4. Faux tin sheets are way more expensive than the people on TV lead you to believe. Skip it.
5. Primer can be tinted if you can’t find grey primer on the shelf. If you really have to, you can leave the wall primed and skip the paint. Grey or tinted primer really makes a huge difference in covering old paint, so don’t skip it. You’ll end up paying more for paint because you’ll have to put on extra coats for coverage.

Home Depot’s been selling paint + primer in the same can, and that seems to be covering pretty darn well. A+++, but limited color choices.
