Apparently my papers for proof of identity aren’t good enough. I haven’t been out of the US in over 10 years so my passport is long expired.
Since I can’t register a car without having a license first, I’m considering transferring title of my car to my boyfriend so he can register it for us. I don’t really care about the legal implications of giving him my car since it’s only worth $2000. I just want this crap over. I don’t have time to go to DMV during the week because I work in VA and DC DMV has extremely limited hours. They only run one location on Saturday and frankly between moving, renovations, and a packed social schedule. I won’t have a free Saturday till July.
FWIW, my VA license will not expire for another 5 years because I just renewed it this winter.
Now off I go to research how to get a reissued birth certificate.
UPDATE: Getting a re-issue was pretty easy. The state vital statistics website lets you order one online from VitalChek. If I am lucky, I will have it by Friday. Now, if only I can get my driver’s license and registration done before the movers arrive at noon on Saturday…

This sounds like a freaking nightmare. Oh god.
Your biggest problem transferring your car might be insurance. You should at least check that.
Actually car insurance was easy. All I had to do was change the coverage. They said call back when you get your new driver’s license. That was it!
Just so you know — I’ve found the main DMV and Georgetown locations to be major pains in the @$$ when dealing with paperwork. Take a trip out to the Penn Branch DMV over on the other side of the Anacostia and they’ll take care of you. Just make sure you have your car safety inspection paperwork in good order before arriving.
And if all else fails — ask for Ms. Holmes at the Penn Branch place. She loves dealing with the young professionals who are fed up with the papering process of the great DC DMV. She reminds me of my grandmother.
Ah, DC DMV… I remember them! Not fondly, of course. At one point, my Roommate (whose car was registered in DC while we lived in DC) totaled her car on the Beltway and had to go through all the stupid paperwork for that… She’s a schoolteacher, though, so do you really think she could get time off for that? PFT!
Yeah. DC’s stupid in a lot of ways.
Thanks for the comment Jason. Penn Branch in Anacostia is the only DMV open on Saturdays, so that is the branch I visited.
Hello there…I’m a frequent reader but haven’t commented before. I wanted to let you know that the M Street SW DMV location is open Saturdays too(unless something has recently changed). I’ve had pretty good luck with that location before.
Thanks for the suggestion Chrystal, but I like to park for free. Georgetown is a mess on Saturdays. I used to live in Foxhall Village, so I am familiar with the headache.
Hi again…just want to clarify, there’s a DMV location on M street SW – right near the Nationals stadium- and you can park for free! I really enjoy reading your blog. Happy moving this weekend!
