My New Living Situation

by mapgirl on May 8, 2009

To clarify some questions from the curious:

My boyfriend owns his own home. I will be moving into it. There is a spare bedroom for my furniture and crafty supplies. We are going to paint it to match my furniture. (Hence the tinted primer we got last weekend.) We’re keeping my most of my furniture. In the end, I will only be shedding a coffee table and boyfriend will be getting rid of a desk because he likes mine better. We are shopping for a buffet for additional kitchen storage (and I think we found one on Craigslist). We have long since run out of storage now that I’m buying stand mixers and taking my appliances to his place. (Crockpot, rice cooker, etc.)

From a financial perspective, my boyfriend is now leasing me a room for $800 a month with all utilities included, which is fair market rent and allows him to take a tax deduction. The lease is the legal proof I need to establish residency in DC so I can move my tags and whatnot. He’s not holding a security deposit or anything like that and I’m only giving him $234 rent for May since he wanted to buy our Frozen Four hockey tickets but I ended up buying them before he had the chance.

From a legal perspective, an attorney friend told me to write down everything that I own so we’re in agreement if anything goes wrong. Boyfriend and I are terribly jaded when it comes to relationships so it bothers neither of us to be a little protective of our stuff.

Boyfriend has said I can freely blog about his business, but I am uncomfortable doing that right now. So if you do have other questions, please note that I may leave them unanswered or will only answer them in person over a beer. :-)

I think it’s a v. smart idea to get things down in writing. You never know when something can go wrong…
