Drama With My Car

by mapgirl on May 6, 2009

I am trying to get my car inspected and moved into DC. However, there is a problem with a superficial crack on the rear bumper. I got an estimate a few years ago for about $750 to fix in Northern Virginia, however, my car has always passed inspection with that crack in MD, VA, and PA.

DC however doesn’t care. They want my money and by gum, they’re not getting it.

I took the car to a shop near my office in Virginia. I got a paper quote for $500, but the guy wrote $450 next to it. WOO HOO! I would shop around more for another estimate, but a guy at work also took his car in for a bumper replacement estimate at a shop close by and got $700. We’re now waiting to see if my $450 job is good or not. Heck boyfriend and I were thinking of doing it ourselves, but I have no time to waste.

You see, I have gotten $300 in tickets in the last 14 days because I do not have DC tags on my car. It’s a long story and I don’t want to get into it. The long and short of things is that I paid one off to get it off my plate so I could register the car without a problem, only to get a ticket 10 days later by the same meter maid. I fought that one in court and I will also fight the new ticket.

Don’t ask me about guest permits for my car, else I’ll turn homicidal at boyfriend. I have one now, and that is all that matters.

Hopefully I will have DC tags by Saturday night.

ps- We’ve been joking around about trading my Altima in for a Solstice before they disappear. However, I realize that compared to other people, I’ve had *very little* problems with my car so far, and she’s pushing 9 years old now. The only thing I’ve had to do is regular maintenance. Nothing has exploded, cracked or caught on fire, etc. (Well the engine mounts did crack, but I was referring to the windshield.) I’m going to drive this thing into the ground. (It’s at 138K miles already, more than what my condo cost!)

Ugh. DC parking cops. And Boston ones! Makes me appreciate Texas.

I used to live in the burbs of DC so I never had to deal with the DC laws, fortunately.

I guess another reason to love MD :)

Good luck, hopefully the bumper is fixed to their standards!

I drive a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo and I, too, plan on driving it into the ground. I am almost at 100K miles, I am sure I will hit that before the year ends. :-( Hope she doesn’t give me problems once I get there.

Ah yes, the DC ticket mavens. I don’t miss them at all! Do they still boot your car if you have more than 3 or 4 unpaid parking tickets?
