PSA: Back Up Your Data!

by mapgirl on May 5, 2009

Amazon’s deal of the day on the sidebar is showing a portable 250GB hard drive for $60.00. I rarely encourage people to buy anything from it, but if you do not have your computer backed up, I highly encourage you to buy this item and back up your data ASAP. Now that your taxes are filed, it’s a good time to back up your electronic copies if you have them.

There’s been a rash of computer failures around my office and it’s kind of freaked me out. I would like to update some software on my company-issued laptop, but I’m afraid it will kill my computer. (Several folks have lost their data because they failed to back stuff up.)

Because I am moving, I’ve already backed up my home desktop just in case it gets broken. Plus I regularly back up my Quicken files to a separate drive to ensure I don’t have any data loss. Plug and play USB drives make back ups very easy.

Like the old Nike commercials say: JUST DO IT.

An easy way to backup data is using a ync tool like SyncToy from MS, or Allway Sync. You set up a directory you want to sync and where it goes to (including USB Keys or network shares, or other drives), and the software copies any changes or new files to your backup location automatically. I use one with my work laptop and the desktop on my desk, it backs up any important docs between the two every few days just in case one of them fails.

Data loss shouldn’t happen anymore with free tools like this available and with drive space so cheap.

I keep my data now on a 16GB USB drive that I plug into the computer I am using. Applications reside on the computer hard drives which are also my back ups. I back up regularly to the different drives at home and in the office. I used to do something similar with a portable hard-drive but the USB drives are now big enough for my needs and easier to use with a laptop.
