More Car Stuff

by mapgirl on May 28, 2009

Before I threw the car out of alignment last week I bought some touch-up paint for my car, Nissan Opal Blue. I was reading online that as long as you own a grinder already, it only costs about $25 in primer, paint, sandpapers, and supplies to fix a rust spot. Since boyfriend owns a handy-dandy [...]

Lots of Spending This Weekend

by mapgirl on May 26, 2009

That’s $360 for movers for 3 hours and a tip. $450 for a new dishwasher at Sears. That includes a 5% discount for using boyfriend’s Sears card. And another $70 for paint and some more supplies at Home Depot.
We also ate dinner out twice over the holiday weekend. The first check was for Chevy’s about [...]

Feeding Frenzy, Morality

by mapgirl on May 25, 2009

From the New York Times this weekend, an article on the Phoenix real estate market and professional investors snapping up properties on the cheap.
Read the last few paragraphs:
As Mr. Jarvis [professional real estate investor] scouts for houses, he sometimes finds a familiar one. In February, he saw a home that one of his brothers bought [...]

Some Tips on Decorating Your Home

by mapgirl on May 22, 2009

The overall concept of this list is that samples save you money and effort. Buy a small amount before you commit to a larger purchase.
1. You can buy individual stick-on tiles and move them around the floor to figure out which one looks best.
2. You can buy small jars of paint which are a few [...]

It’s Official

by mapgirl on May 21, 2009

I am a DC resident.
Apparently I used to have DC license, but I don’t recall having one before I moved into Virginia. But I do and it was reinstated.
How much did dealing with DC cost me?
$35 for new birth certificate
$450 in superficial car repair to meet their inspection rules
$35 for inspection
$26 for new title
$144 for [...]

Scraping Up Cash

by mapgirl on May 21, 2009

The nice thing about having an elastic budget is being able to find cash immediately.
Having the car thrown out of alignment was killing me the other day. I sat looking at my spreadsheets trying to figure out how to make my goals for credit card payoff by the end of the year.
Luckily I just decided [...]

Ode To My Car

by mapgirl on May 20, 2009

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
1. You are the first car I’ve ever bought (with help from dad).
2. You are the car that took me from my 20’s into my 30’s.
3. You are reliable and start every morning.
4. You get great mileage for your class and age.
5. You are still pretty [...]

I don’t know about you, but I left college with about $20-25K in loans. It’s been so long I forgot the exact amount. But I do remember that my freshman year of college cost about $19K for tuition and another $7K for room and board (19-meal plan).
I just ran across a NYTimes article and in [...]

Dealing With DC

by mapgirl on May 18, 2009

Apparently my papers for proof of identity aren’t good enough. I haven’t been out of the US in over 10 years so my passport is long expired.
Since I can’t register a car without having a license first, I’m considering transferring title of my car to my boyfriend so he can register it for us. I [...]

Prosper Update

by mapgirl on May 15, 2009

I’ve been putting this off, mostly because one of my loans was going bad, but I waited long enough and now the loan is current again. I have 6 remaining loans left out of the 8 total I made. 1 loan is charged off in ‘recovery’, which is still being paid off, but the borrower [...]
