Howdy Mapgirl, I just stumbled across your blog (i forget how) and already love it as this post made me laugh so much - I have an indonesian mother, and everything you wrote is like a day in my life - I'm 28 and my mother always always says to me "why don't you put on some lipstick? be nice on your pretty face" or things along those lines, but yet, i wasn't allowed to wear makeup til I was 16, even when I begged.

Looking forward to following your blog, good luck on your debt reduction!

You're pretty cute naturally.

And I hope I'm not that ugly, because I have a similarly light beauty regimen. Fortunately, I work in Technical Services in a library, so I don't even see patrons. Just have to look decent for coworkers. :)

I'm 29. Being cute doesn't cost me a lot. I'm a minimalist. I have tweezers to clean up the shape of my eyebrows, clippers, cuticle scissors and a file for my nails, and drugstore makeup (no foundation yet) for the days or nights when I feel like having my eyes pop. I hardly even paint my nails. It's such a small bit of my expenses that I hardly ever think about what I spend. I'm black, so I'm naturally tan. Store-brand disposable razors take care of whatever tweezing won't - and without pain. I really wouldn't do a lot of what others do to be pretty. I guess with time, I'll do more, but I'd draw the line at surgery. I don't do unnecessary health complications. I won't even get my near-sighted, astigmatic eyes done.

It's interesting where we agree and where we disagree. I've got special effects colored hair right now -- the electric blue is one of my faves but right now it's purple streaked with blue/green. :D I love that my job doesn't mind -- actually when I have a natural hair color for too long my coworkers start asking when I'm going to dye it all crazy again. (And no, too much bleaching doesn't make it fall out. Well. You might kill the hair you currently have, but it grows back in just fine. ;p)

I would never consider plastic surgery though. What's this about it raising your salary? Are you nuts? Isn't that like saying you'll probably get more raises if you wear miniskirts and stiletto heels? I mean, surely that doesn't happen anymore??

As for me, I don't wear any make-up at all to work, it's just too much bother. I'll put on some eyeliner and mascara if I'm going out in the evening and feel like it.

I do get pedicures and bikini waxes very occasionally when I want that pampered feeling, and I pluck my brows so they don't meet in the middle, but that's about it. Heck, I don't even shave my legs anymore... I decided fuzzy was preferable to stubble.

You're right though, those prices are insane. I cut and dye my own hair, do my nails at home, and buy drugstore brands of cosmetics and such. Not a huge expense for me.
