Friend's parents wouldn't let her go alone, and I couldn't afford the whole trip, so they insisted that they were going to subsidize part of it so I'd be her bodyguard. We also hostelled and met some very interesting people that way, and had great laughs about the varying degrees of quality that we encountered that I bet we'd not have experienced if we'd gone the standard hotel route.
