Round trip on the metro during rush hour may be a beer - but a day of pay parking is an entire happy hour, and round-trip cab fare (especially across the river) is a (non-fast-food) dinner and a movie.

Great comments! Thanks!

Sadly, even the suburbs are not that safe around DC. Last year or the year before in Reston, there was a serial rapist on the prowl. So be mindful of yourself at all times around here. It is a major city.

One potential option I came up with is to live near a metro station just outside DC... The problem is that the less expensive places aren't the better places to live. But it's still doable, just plan a safe commute, try not to be out walking after dark if possible.

As a young professional who moved to DC out of college and worked a $9/hr internship, here's my advice:

Look to neighborhoods that are "developing". I would live in Columbia Heights, Shaw, Capitol Hill, and Petworth. They are safe, as safe as any inner-city neighborhood can be. Be cautious of what middle aged suburbanites tell you about neighborhoods that they have not been to in 10 years. DC has changed A LOT.

My experience:
I paid $750 to split a 1 bedroom in Foggy Bottom.

I paid $800 for a 2 bedroom rent controlled apt. in Dupont. No roommate was allowed however.

I sublet an apartment in Cleveland Park for 3 months at $650 a month.
