I've found that the only component that tends to last is the monitor - I still have CRTs that work fine after ten years. I'd recommend buying a desktop PC (you can get them for around $600 new), and maybe paying a bit extra for a better LCD screen. I bought a brand new Dual Core HP laptop for $650 including shipping. The power cord goes into the motherboard. The MB is not made to take the plugging and flexing and broke. I replaced the MB and two weeks later my dog (RIP) jumped over my legs and hit the plug broke it. I haven't had a laptop in 3 years now.
