Most computers aren't worth repairing, whether they are desktops or laptops. I've found that the only component that tends to last is the monitor - I still have CRTs that work fine after ten years. I'd recommend buying a desktop PC (you can get them for around $600 new), and maybe paying a bit extra for a better LCD screen. Then in two or three years you can upgrade the box without paying for another screen.

I think you're on the right track with buying a desktop. The mobility of a laptop comes with a steep price. Even if you get a non-Mac laptop, repairs are insanely expensive.

That Macs are unreasonably expensive to repair is their fatal flaw. I bought a brand new Dual Core HP laptop for $650 including shipping. If it breaks, I'll just buy a new one or repair it myself since PC parts are so affordable comparable to mac, even laptop PC parts.

HP laptops had a flaw that killed mine. The power cord goes into the motherboard. The MB is not made to take the plugging and flexing and broke. I replaced the MB and two weeks later my dog (RIP) jumped over my legs and hit the plug broke it. I haven't had a laptop in 3 years now. I can't justify another $450 MB for a computer that must be used on a table to not break the MB again.
