Another Reason Why I Don’t Have Pets

by mapgirl on February 28, 2008

My boyfriend’s dog peed on my laptop. Not intentionally. We think she was sitting on his couch (which she’s not supposed to do) and had an accident. Poor girl’s fur was soaked in pee which leads us to think she might have a bladder problem.

Some of the moisture got wicked up the little cracks in the bottom of the laptop and now it’s fried. I’m going to take it into the Apple store and see what can be done. I have the original receipt.

I use it pretty much as a terminal for blogging and checking email at his house since I like to be able to check email daily so it’s not vital, but it does explain a little about why posting has been light recently. I dislike using his computer for my stuff. The really important stuff is on my desktop at home, which gets a regular back up on an external hard drive.

I’m just sad because there is no way I can replace it for the same price I paid. This was a laptop my friend did not want because she hated it. I got an extremely good deal on a gently used model that is fully loaded with software. The timing is also terrible since I was going to take it to Boston this weekend to entertain me when I fly.

At any rate, if we thought the dog was going to pee there, we wouldn’t have left it on the couch. As it was, this is the first time she’s done this sort of thing and now we’re worried she has a bladder issue.

You can’t get mad at a dog. You just can’t. She was so happy to see us when we got home that night. I don’t understand people who think dogs are sneaky and malicious. Cats are sneaky and will poop in your closet. Dogs are dumb and sweet. I really like my boyfriend’s dog so my fellow co-worker’s suggestion that I make ultimatums about me or the dog were way out there.

Boyfriend has offered to pay for a new battery, but I don’t want to say ok till the damage is fully assessed. Maybe there is a magic rescue for it.

Boyfriend definitely should pay for repair.

But that stinks. Literally, probably.

A cat will poop in your closet? The reason we have a cat is because dogs are so nasty and first chance they get, they will pee on your laptop…Actually I laughed when I read that. Cats are cool though. Low cost and low maintenance..I dig your blog. Keep up the good work!!!

Good luck with the Apple store. I’d take bf up on that offer depending on what the damage actually is and what needs to be paid for. Ick.

Maybe you just have to be careful at all times. Dogs are like kids, even toddlers ( well, if they are not disciplined and properly trained though ) They pee anywhere, munch the pillows on your couch, destroy the plants and run over the house until some vases and other glass materials break.

There are dog breeds, when properly taught, that are friendly and behaved. If you love pets and are only hampered by some of their disgusting behavior, try to place outside the house.

Don’t admit to the water damage, or they won’t fix it without charging you. The going rate for parts replacement on a MacBook runs a flat fee of $750, in many cases, although that replaces *everything*, from a bad motherboard and chip to a new LCD screen.

Give “AppleCare Water Damage” a Google search?

The next time you have a liquids plus laptop incident (if there’s a next time), leave the laptop off, open it up, turn it upside-down, take off all covers that you can, stick a fan next to it and let it dry for two days. Don’t turn a laptop on when there’s moisture in there, that’s how it got fried. I had a laptop survive an entire 16 oz of coffee with cream and sugar (sticky!) because I just let it dry out first.

It’s possible that your laptop may come back to life. I hope for the best.

Yeah, pets. It’s why we can’t have nice things.

With liquid damage, especially pee, immediately remove all sources of power including batteries and submerge the device in 99% isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol will displace the fluids including any sediments, and then evaporate quickly and cleanly.

The reason pee sucks so bad is because of all the sediments from tap water and the digestive process.

We don’t have pets either. There’s no insurance they won’t pee or poop ANYwhere in the house and they lead to more and costs (food, shots, check-ups). With all that to say, I do love dogs. I grew up with them and wish someday we’re in a position to have one but for our lifestyle at the moment, it just doesn’t work.

I’ve never understood people that allow animals in there house knowing they will pee and poop where people eat and sleep. Though it is not my house and they can do what they want, I can smell the stink of animals everytime I walk into those homes.

I’ll only add that please do not follow the persons advice to lie about the water damage. Your ethics is worth more then a computer

Oh noooooo! I’m so sorry–that sucks.

And I hope his dog is ok. You’re absolutely right to think that a health problem may have caused her accident.

Chitown March 3, 2008 at 1:19 pm

You have such a great attitude about it.

I absolutely love dogs!

It happens. Anyway I would offer to pay if my dogs did that. And dogs are not disgusting.

By the way, if anyone I dated ever said “me or the dog” they would be gone so fast there’d be no time to pack.

And my dogs have been with me longer than the SO, except my current DH who I got the dogs with. Same with him, if I died or we split, anyone who said dog or them, we’ll it’d be the dogs.

Ha, I have a dog, and the only person who’s gotten liquid on both the couch and fried my laptop is… my wife. :)

I agree it’s annoying that it usually costs less to simply buy a new laptop than to fix it.

I’ll vouch that cats will at least pee in your closet, but they can still be sweet. Mine “kisses” me just like a small dog with a really rough tongue. Don’t tell her I said that. :)

Dogs though… I’m just not a dog person. Never have been, never will be. But they are sweet, I won’t argue that.

cats are cool until they start fighting among themselves. Our two cats who have been friends for years now fight all the time. One even stopped using the litter box and started going in a corner of the living room.

We got a 2nd litter box and that does not work too well either. But I still do not have to walk them like I would with dogs :)
