Yesterday was three happy years of condo ownership.
Financially, the picture outlook is much better than it was 3 years ago. I was still paying off my car, my student loans and had about <$3K in retirement accounts.
I have mixed feelings about owning property. It doesn’t fit my lifestyle. I actually hate having to maintain the place. It’s not my bag. But on balance, I like having my own space without roommates. I like owning something. It’s less of a loss than renting is.
Having a mortgage motivated me to find a new job and make a lot more money. So having a home indirectly makes me wealthier. It’s been an all around good thing to have a home rather than rent.
It’s not for everybody, that’s for sure.

Congrats mapgirl! Now we have a reason to celebrate and plan the August DC Happy Hour. LOL
I can definitely see how owning would be more satisfying than renting. Right now I feel like I am pouring money in to a black hole.
I have a maybe kind of lame question, but I just started my blog, and I’d love to track my goals. Did you use html from Clutter2Cash’s blog, or is there somewhere else I could find code like that to track my financial goals?
TeenyShoes – I can send you the code for the bar graph. Generally speaking ‘ganked’ means I stole the code with Caitlin’s permission.
If anyone else wants it, please leave a comment and I can email it to you.
Yes please! My email address is teenyshoes at gmail dot com. Thank you so much!
It does take a while to get used to being responsible for all the maintenance, but there are perks as well. I sponge-painted two living room walls with the help of a friend – great effect/impact, and low cost too. I did it over 3 years ago when I bought my place, and it still makes me smile…
