Discovery Channel Stores Going Out of Business

by mapgirl on June 8, 2007

I had an eye appointment at the mall today. While I was leaving I walked past a Discovery Channel store. I remembered some bloggers posting about the stores being closed, so I decided to browse.

Everything is 20% off right now. Not enough of a discount to make me go on a buying spree. But I will try to visit it once more in a few weeks. There’s a few things I could use that they have, mostly future Christmas presents for kids I know and a few adults. Honestly, I wasn’t that impressed with their inventory. Some of their ‘adult gadgets’ are pretty lame. I was particularly scrutinizing the LED lights. I love LED flashlights when I’m camping or in an nighttime emergency. But their products were pretty lame when you compared them to real gear like Petzl headlamps or Photons. The price discount wasn’t enough to thrill me into cleaning off the shelf.

The things that might give you the best value:
Toys and books for kids
Mythbuster DVD’s
Life is Good and Lavender products for women
Clocks with temperature gauges
miJAM toys (the flower was really cute for the iPod)
Creative MP3 player accessories

That was about it. I’d wait until they knock stuff down to 30-40% before going nuts there.

Mind you, I got a great deal at Kmart when they went out of business a few years ago. I bought lots of plastic tarps (always popular when you’re camping) and Chapsticks. I was late to the party so there wasn’t much left to buy so you do have to catch the wave between the falling prices and inventory. I am most sad that they don’t have the DVD’s of the Planet Earth program they had on earlier this year. That was a really beautiful show.

Good luck!

I remember when those stores used to seem so cool to me in the early 90s. They had neat things that you couldn’t find elsewhere. But then it seemed that they couldn’t keep up, or something.

Discovery Channel will be closing all stores by Sept 1. The stores are currently at 30% – 50% off and still have alot of inventory left. Maybe the President of the company should consider Discovery Channel is a huge part of our lives and I love the store. I hate to see them go!
