Debtors I Like vs Debtors I Hate

N.B. I drafted this post long before I found out Mr. Serin is ending his blog.

I can’t stand Casey Serin. I don’t have to visit his blog to feel this way. The meta information out there about him is enough to make me think that I don’t want to read what he has to say. He deserves to be in jail. (Escape Brooklyn and JaneDough have articles on him.)

Then I read something like DebtKid and I just feel for the guy. He seems earnest in getting out of his massive debt legitimately, working hard to retain his business and repay his mom back for the money of hers that he lost. At least he’s making the honest choices and the right moves to scale back and not lose his shirt completely. There’s a post about eating ramen overnight at work to save money. How many of you would sleep at the office eating ramen because you were too poor to use up gas to drive home? The other thing is that Debt Kid trying to stay out of bankruptcy as much as he can. Mr. Serin is also staying out of bankruptcy because he says he has nothing for the creditors to take.

Oh trust me, Mr. Serin, there is. There always is. I don’t trust liars to tell me there’s nothing left.

I used to work for a bankruptcy trustee as a temp. My assignment was to recreate the personal and business check registers for a fraudulent flipper in Baltimore. (Careful clicking that. It’s a PDF file to an Appellate court ruling on the case.) My job was specifically to look for a payment from the business checking accounts for a Mercedes the wife’s father was hiding/driving. The wife stayed out of jail and her husband took the fall and the jail term. I swear, for all the Cancun vacations, shopping sprees and manicures I saw paid out for the wife, he would be lucky if she was around when he got out. (Holy Cow! They are still together and he was indicted again! Along with his shady lawyer!)

I find Mr. Serin to be vile and possibly criminal. It sounds like he should be charged with fraud and everything taken away. It’s not true that all you are left is the shirt on your back. They leave you all your clothes because they have little to no resale value. But honestly, for all his arrogance, I think people would rip his clothes to shred to express their displeasure at his mockery of the financial system and arrogance at the rest of us who actually work to pay our bills.

ps- I found the check! We showed the proof to the FBI that the car was purchased by the company and not the wife or father-in-law themselves and it was repossessed.

I’m with you on this one - 100%. I find myself rooting for the DebtKid. He is painfully honest and I believe that is what will eventually cement him. Your name and word are worth more than anything else.
