A coordinated statement has been issued by Kathy Sierra and Chris Locke. I suggest everyone read it who read my previous post on the matter. And this is the last time I’m going to post about this. If you care to discuss further, you can email me directly.
I don’t know either of these people very well. I only have heard of them by reputation. Chris Locke is one of the writers of the Cluetrain Manifesto and very influential. Some of the ideas in the CM are ideas I buy into as a software professional and Internet denizen. Kathy Sierra has written Head First Java, a book which I have seen and browsed, of which my colleagues speak highly.
It is very sad that while Kathy and Chris have found some common ground in this, there is one item that no one has taken responsibility for, probably because she is going to continue to prosecute that item. I am glad that Kathy has found some small measure of peace and that Chris’ initial reaction is placed into a better context. I will admit, he didn’t sound like someone I wanted to get to know when I first read his post about the matter, but it seems that misinformation was everywhere and his position on the issue is clarified.
The bottom line is this, vile and disgusting misogynistic language is NOT OK on the Internet or anywhere. Do not sweep it under the rug or shrug it off.
