Gifting on a Budget 2006

by mapgirl on December 18, 2006

Because I am in a regularly meeting knitting group, I decided for the really regular folks, I’d give out some bottled honey from my boss, the bee-keeper. It worked out really well. I got ten half pound jars at a discount and one of my friends ripped hers open in front of us and put some into her tea at Starbucks, where we meet. SCORE! Everyone was happy and I spent less than $5 per person. All extras are for other friends, but this really makes life easy. No one got a knitted gift more special than any other, etc.

The tally so far?

$25 for honey
$15 for an iTunes gift card
$130 for Christmas ornaments for my sibling and family of 3

I don’t see myself getting anything for my parents, nor do I expect them to exchange gifts with me this year. I promised my mom I would help her pay for new windows on her house next year, so there won’t be any presents for a while, just acknowledgements, like a fancy dinner, cards, etc. However, I am working on a pair of socks for myself, and I will probably give them to her even though the first one has a mistake at the heel. The cost of the socks? $13.00 for the yarn and god only knows for the labor.

As far as my co-workers go, I’m on a small team, so I will probably splurge on liquor or wine for home consumption. The boys have posh tastes, so I’m hoping to find something for a good price.

Don’t think about how much the labor was for the socks. I figured out recently, my current sock costs about $300 worth of time.

I have to say I love honey. I once went to a store with lots of exotic honey samples and I could go around and taste every one. I was very happy that day. :)

Do you recommend any special type of honey?

Hi Wanda!

I actually don’t recommend anything other than local honey if you have allergies. One reason why I love my boss’ honey is that it’s local. I don’t really taste a lot of difference with clover or orange blossom honey unless it’s a side-by-side tasting, but I just sampled some amazing stuff from Pike Place Market that was blackberry flavored. It was stunning enough to take to my boss to try.

I hear if you like making barbecue sauce, try garlic or chive blossom honey. It’s supposed to add some kick.

Hi! I also knit and live in Arlington. Where do you guys get together for your group? I’d love to join sometime.

Hi Sarah, my group is out in the burbs where I work. But some folks meet in Clarendon… Check the Yahoo Group for the NoVA knitters/crocheters. Also, there is dcknitting.net, which has a pretty comprehensive list as well. :-)
