I’ve got a good buzz going on!

by mapgirl on December 11, 2006

I finally learned how to change the fluorescent light bulbs in my kitchen. It makes a little buzzing noise!
Other helpful advice:

1. Get a really tall ladder or a really tall friend to help. Otherwise your arms will get really tired over your head. Do your tricep extensions. They’re pretty sexy and you’ll need those muscles for this job.
2. Don’t take that cover off too early. If you fry a lot, the oils will coat the bulbs, making them a bit hard to rotate if you hands get sweaty.
3. Take a bulb out, or copy down the part number. It will take a lot of the guesswork out of shopping. Fortunately, my bulbs burned out at the same time and the lamp itself takes 2. I got a two pack at Home Depot, though they also sell them in 10 packs and individually. Next time, I keep the packaging from the bulbs so that I grab it out of my toolbox and go to the store. (Though I may not be in this studio for the 7 years these bulbs last. If so, hand that to the people who buy the place. They will need it.)

That is all. Hopefully this means a return to enjoying my kitchen. However, due the crappy day I had at work, I’m off for half-priced burgers tonight at Whitlow’s on Wilson in Arlington. All day on Mondays, dine-in only, click the link and read all about it. (Sunday brunch has a Bloody Mary Buffet if you like that sort of thing, which I do.)

The best thing my landlord did was leave a spare lightbulb for every light fitting plus the box. It made it so easy when the time came to change bulbs and I make sure to keep one extra in stock, plus keep a box for the details.
Light bulbs these days can last for ages so by the time you need to change them, you’ve forgotten the whole process!
(PS Enjoy the half price burgers!)

Hey, my neck of the woods! Whitlow’s is actually really kid friendly (being a loud restaurant helps hide when my kids freak out and make noise), and they are one of the earliest opening Sunday brunches (sorry people, my kids need to eat, we’re not waiting for you to get out of church to get our food on).

Speaking of frugal Mondays, I’m a big fan of $1 Mondays at the Drafthouse. (And 2-for-1 Sundays, for that matter.)

That sounds like a sweet burger deal, gotta check it out.
