Only SPAM allowed here is by Hormel

by mapgirl on November 28, 2006

A Filipina friend of mine and I once decided long ago that it is the right of all Asian peoples occupied by Americans to love that canned meat known as SPAM.

Take it from a girl who grew up near Amish country, it’s a step up from scrapple. (Which I like, fresh off the farm, very crispy with maple syrup.) You don’t want to know what’s in it, so please don’t ask.

Anyhow, I am getting comment spammed and I’m trying to zap them all when I have the time to moderate them properly. It’s really disgusting stuff and that’s what I get for turning off comment registration. I have zero time to explore solutions right now. (Can you say “botched upgrade at work”?) I’m just happy to remember to eat some calories. (Best weight loss plan ever involves lots of work stress, tight deadlines and serious “portion control”, i.e. skipping lunch because you completely forgot to eat.)

So please bear with me for now. My to do list for the blog has spam control at the top.
Also, if I put an actual “Subscribe to my feed” link back up on the right, will folks resubscribe? The new feed is rather sickly. Thanks for visiting me here. One day it’ll all get better. I promise. This condition is only temporary.

What it is about Asians and SPAM (the food)? I ate it as a kid too, growing up in TN of all places, and am as a result am not at all repelled by it like I’m supposed to be. No idea about what’s behind this phenomenon.

If you’re running Wordpress, just activate Akismet, which should be a plugin that automatically came with v2.0 (which I’m assuming you’re running). The only extra step is that you have to go to wordpress.org and sign up for an account (even though you’re not going to use it ever again) to get an API. Take that API (I think it’s a series of numbers and letters if I recall correctly) and put it into Akismet, and it’s good to go.

Sorry to hear you’re having issues with spam comments; I’m using a plugin for word-press that catches some of them (thankfully I’ve only had a few). I’m sure there are some plugins that could help you out.

We have something known as souse meat. I like to think of it as the Southern version of scrapple.

You’re absolutely right: you don’t want to know what’s in it.

Ricemutt, what is it with non-Asians and no liking Spam? Seriously, it’s no less healthy or mysterious than hot dogs or sausages.

Maybe it has to do with how Spam goes ridiculously well with white rice. Especially white rice, a fried egg and some soy sauce! Oh man, I grew up on that stuff. It’s also phenomenal in fried rice or in a dish called spam musubi, which is kind of like a spam sushi.

“what is it with non-Asians and no liking Spam?” -me

That was supposed to be “not liking spam.” That wasn’t a bad attempt at “me love you long time” humor. Just a typo.

You guys (and my wife, and any other asian person who likes spam) are nuts. I didn’t realize it was an asian thing, I thought my wife was the only asian person that liked it.
Spam is sooooo disgusting. Like, seriously. And LAM was going on about jook the other day, I’m sorry, but I do not like that either. Those are the two things that my wife eats that I just can’t. Almost everything else I can handle.

Nuts I tell you

:P

My husband loves this revoluting mixture of shredded SPAM, shredded cheese (velveeta accepted) and mayonaise that is put on top of hamburger burger buns halves and toasted in the oven. He is a white boy from Wisconsin.

forget to mention ketchup is added too

I’m with LAMoneyGuy – If you’ve eaten hot dogs, you’ve eaten the same quality food. Heck, there are brain sandwiches out there. Also check out the Hickory Farms “Beef Stick”.

I love spam. I love hot dogs. I hate Vienna sausage. Spam musubis are the best.

By the way, I think the reason why Asians like Spam is that it goes well with soy sauce, just just rice. Adding sodium to the saltest food on earth? Heck yeah. But that may just be me.

I think a post reminding about your new feed would be pertinent. (We are busy/lazy too :) ) I totally forgot until now.

Spam is actually from Minnesota, and lots of Minnesotan’s love it too!

mapgirl December 3, 2006 at 10:42 pm

hha- That’s kind of a gross combination.

Jonathan- MN? Didn’t know that. Thanks for the trivia bit!

Franky- SPAM is good if you try it. My favorite way is kind of trashy, but good. Fried egg, fried SPAM slices on white toast with maple syrup. Good eatin’.

And that doesn’t include all the Asian ways of eating it!

“Fried egg, fried SPAM slices on white toast with maple syrup”
That sounds sooo bad for you, I swear. I have tried it, and I didn’t like it. Whenver my wife wants to make spam or jook, I eat tuna and rice. Bleh
:P

mapgirl December 4, 2006 at 1:46 pm

Franky, Tuna has mercury it in. I’ll take my chances with SPAM. (though look for my sushi post coming soon… ate lots of tuna then.)

Check out Akismet. It was created by the guy behind WordPress and helps a LOT in curtailing comment spam. There are other things like setting up “captcha”s, etc. that can also help.
