Migrating to WordPress

by mapgirl on July 16, 2006

I took Flexo up on his offer. However, my new site isn’t ready yet. Not by a longshot. I need to learn CSS and PHP before I can get the new site looking anything like Blogger.

I spent a lot of time modifying the DOTS template so that it became dot-less in three columns with colors I didn’t mind staring at. And now I weep.

Don’t get me wrong. I think WordPress is going to be great. I was considering moving over when my parent had a stroke this spring, so I pushed it all off, and I am lucky that Flexo’s offer has come through just as my traveling schedule is slowing down.

However, I was silly not to realize that moving over is going to involve a lot of work to make stuff look pretty again. I really dislike using cookie-cutter templates which is why I underwent a lot of work to move off the dots in the first place.

Now it’s back to the drawing board as I figure out another programming language and web development. I suppose this can only be a career enhancing move for me since I an always put those letters on my resume for good use.

Who knows, maybe I’ll re-invent myself as a web developer with lots of PL/SQL experience.

Stay tuned. I’ll announce the new site when it’s something close to looking right.

You’re “lucky” you know how to program at all…. all weekend I’ve been tossing back and forth the question, “Do I want to learn to program or not.”

I think I am too far behind the curve– between design, database, and fuctionality there is just too much to try to start learning now… There are plenty of good programmers around so I will gladly continue to pay and partner with them… with each year it gets easier and easier to do more and more without writing even a line of code.

You know whats funny. I just got to thinking about it… I have several websites that I pay for hosting for and I wouldn’t be able to hand code even a hyperlink without looking at another one… I am truly a marketing guy anyway… i’d probably have to get on Ritalin if I were going to try to sit down and code for an hour.

I read whats his names offer. It is a good one but you know it only costs $5-$8 a month for some great web hosting packages if you wanted to do your own.

You are right though, PHP would be great to know- it is powerful- i’ve watched my web programmer do some amazing things with it.

Good luck, and yes, your blogger blog looks good.

I thought I never had the time or wherewithal to learn programming. I used to dine with the great minds of UC-Berkeley’s CS department and frankly, those guys really are as smart as people think they are. No, I’ll never be a theoretical CS PhD, but to hack my way through to make a nice salary, I can do that. A lot of people can!

Everything and anything on a resume that can justify asking for more money is worth it. This endeavor will have many positive outcomes once I get over the main obstacle of templating in WordPress.

I took Flexo up on his offer because he’s always been a good guy when I’ve talked with him. I’ve offered him some money for hosting and he’s flat out told me no.

I do recommend Laughing Squid for anyone who does want WordPress hosting. I checked them out and they do the professional sites for several folks I know and my contacts have been very pleased with their service.

If anyone wants to know more, they can always email me. Thanks for visiting Alberen!

It’s never too late to learn how to program! Whether you should do it or not is another question.

I like your blog layout currently, it’s very clean. I would imagine there would be some tips out there to convert Blogger templates to WP themes. The CSS file is most important, converting my Movable Type theme to Wordpress wasn’t that bad. I still haven’t switched to WP yet either though…
